She was a lovely talented woman who inspired many. Unfortunately, Marie Fredriksson lost her life from brain cancer. She previously had undergone surgery to remove her tumour and completed months of chemotherapy and radiation.
Due to complications, Marie was left blind in one of her eyes and experienced limited hearing. She was unable to speak for months after medical procedures.
Marie died on the morning of December 9th the family wrote in a statement. The silent funeral service only included close family members and friends.
Gun-Marie Fredriksson claimed fame alongside Per Gessle as the musical group Roxette. Marie was best known from her music, but she also was a painter. She was a songwriter and played the piano.
Both Gessle and Fredriksson formed the rock pop duo Roxette back in 1986. They released a number of hit songs including the smash hit “It Must Have Been Love” (from the Pretty Woman soundtrack, 1990). Other songs such as “Listen to Your Heart” and “Dangerous” topped the charts as well among others.
The rock duo was meant to be, they had a unique sound that stands the test of time. In 2005, she said: ‘It’s been three very difficult years, I’m healthy. I’m not receiving treatment any more.’
In 2016, she announced that she would no longer touring, writing on Facebook: ‘It’s been an amazing 30 years!
‘I feel nothing but joy and happiness when I look back on the Roxette world tours. All our shows and memories over the years will forever be a big part of my life.
“I’m particularly proud and grateful for coming back in 2009 after my severe illness and to have been able to take Roxette around the globe a couple of more times.
‘Sadly, now my touring days are over and I want to take this opportunity to thank our wonderful fans that has followed us on our long and winding journey.
‘I look forward to the release of our album Good Karma in June – for me it’s our best album ever!’
Swedish newspaper the Express reported: ‘Marie Fredriksson is most mourned by her husband Mikael Bolyos and their two children, [26-year-old daughter Inez Josefin and son Oscar, 23].
