Walt Disney Pictures had an instant hit on their hands, right from the start. This is the first live adaptation of the franchise and there was one pair of shoes tough to fill right from the start. Nobody could ever replace actor and comedian Robin Williams as Genie. However, actor and musician Will Smith was brought in to try. It seems he did an okay job from the word on the street.

Disney’s live-action “Aladdin” will likely be heading for a $100 million dollar opening in North America alone, over the four-day Memorial Day holiday. The expectation (according to sources at Disney) was the film would bring in between $80 to $90 million at the box office. So, it seems they are off to a good start.

Director Guy Ritchie (formerly married to Madonna) tries his best with this production. The film stars Mena Massoud as Aladdin, Will Smith as the Genie, Naomi Scott as Jasmine and Marwan Kenzari as Jafar.

The original animated Aladdin film went on to win two Oscars and grossed $502 million globally.  “Aladdin 2019” is produced by Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich. The film has generated mixed reviews from different critics, including earning a 60% score on the Rotten Tomatoes website. Variety‘s Peter Debruge called it a “mostly rewarding live-action remake.”

Likely, Aladdin will become the eighth film to crack the $100 million dollar mark, over the Memorial Day holiday in the United States. It will be in good company, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (2007) went on to reach $139 million within its first four days of release. There is a small possibility, this film could catch up but won’t surpass that figure it seems.

“Aladdin” tells the story of a homeless thief and “street rat” named Aladdin who falls in love with a princess named Jasmine. When he’s tasked by the evil Jafar to find an ancient, magic lamp, Aladdin discovers and befriends a Genie and is given three wishes that help him to win over Jasmine. It’s a story that resonates with many people and has brought forth mass audience appeal.
