Reddit has taken a stance on what are known as “deepfakes”. These were popularized last year by Reddit users. Some of the celebrities included the likes of Taylor Swift, Emma Watson, Gal Gadot among others.

These women’s faces, were digitized then placed on the nude bodies of porn actresses. This made them appear, as if they were having sex or had released sex tapes of them which were hacked and then released. A Reddit user named deepfakes had accumulated a whopping 100,000 subscribers to the Reddit channel in only a matter of months.

The technology used, creates artificial intelligence video clips. The powerful face-swapping tool, has been used for a number of purposes, including manipulating the faces of celebrities and other people into porn scenes. This tech looks very real and most people would have difficulty telling the difference between what is real and what isn’t. A second Redditor initiated the same thing. Afterward, the channel began to skyrocket. Reddit later released a statement saying:

“Reddit strives to be a welcoming, open platform for all by trusting our users to maintain an environment that cultivates genuine conversation. As of February 7 2018, we have made two updates to our site-wide policy regarding involuntary pornography and sexual or suggestive content involving minors.

These policies were previously combined in a single rule; they will now be broken out into two distinct ones. Communities focused on this content and users who post such content will be banned from the site. The new rule about “involuntary pornography” now explicitly bans “depictions that have been faked”, as well as posting non-explicit images and video for the purposes “of faking explicit content or soliciting ‘lookalike’ pornography.”

A clause was changed which previously existed that banned content that glorifies or promotes rape or non-consensual sexual violence from the site. Reddit is now focusing on a broader reach of both violence and sex that is appearing on the site. Other sites following in Reddit’s footsteps are Twitter and the porn site Pornhub.

More than likely, these companies are afraid of lawsuits and the backlash from the female celebrities, whose heads are being superimposed upon porn stars bodies. Quite possibly, more online companies will soon follow or establish their own policies regarding this as well.
